The Maldives 500 Rufiyaa note celebrates the country’s rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship.
Front Design: The front features a woman making ekels (Iloshi), a traditional craft used for creating brooms, highlighting the importance of preserving Maldivian artisanal traditions. Alongside, an artisan is depicted carving wood with a mallet and chisel, showcasing the intricate woodworking skills that are a cornerstone of Maldivian culture. The vibrant orange theme reflects the dynamism and creativity of these crafts.
Back Design: The reverse side displays a hand-carved traditional vase with lacquer work detailing. This intricate piece represents the artistry of Maldivian craftsmanship. The design includes patterns inspired by the Kuriboantaa, a style frequently seen in handwoven mats (thun'du kunaa), further emphasizing the deep-rooted cultural significance of these crafts.
This note, made of durable polymer, is part of the “Ran Dhihafaheh” series, issued in 2015 to mark the Golden Jubilee of Maldivian Independence. It integrates modern design elements and security features while honoring the country’s traditional heritage.
