After the Curtain Falls: Will the World Dare to Dream of Baldur’s Gate 4?

In August 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 emerged not just as a game, but as a phenomenon. Launched by Larian Studios after years of anticipation and early access development, it delivered a CRPG experience that many considered definitive. Rich in narrative, deep in gameplay systems, and bursting with character, BG3 swept through the gaming world like a mind flayer psionically locking onto our imaginations. But now, with Larian confirming that no major expansions or downloadable content (DLCs) are planned, a new question echoes through the halls of Faerûn: will there ever be a Baldur’s Gate 4?

The Legacy Left by Baldur’s Gate 3

To understand the weight of that question, you first have to understand what Baldur’s Gate 3 became. It wasn’t just a long-awaited sequel—it was a full resurrection of a classic RPG series from the early 2000s. Using the powerful Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition ruleset as a backbone, the game blended turn-based tactical combat with incredibly branching storylines and genuinely reactive world design.

It also did what many modern titles can’t: it respected player agency. The choices you made mattered. Outcomes varied. Companions lived or died by the decisions you chose to carry or avoid. From love stories to betrayals, BG3 invited players to paint their narrative into the world—and the world responded.

A Closing Door… or an Invitation?

In 2024, Larian Studios officially stated they were “done” with Baldur’s Gate 3. No expansion, no DLC, no “Epilogue Patch” tying up every narrative thread in a tidy bow. The decision, while disappointing to some, was also refreshingly honest. The game was complete. It told its story, and the studio wanted to move forward to new ideas.

That puts BG3 in rare company: a blockbuster game that arrives fully realized, and then simply… ends.

But does that truly close the book? Or does it place a bookmark for someone else to reopen it one day?

What Would It Take to Make Baldur’s Gate 4?

Creating a fourth installment wouldn’t simply be another entry in a franchise—it would be a monumental storytelling challenge. Baldur’s Gate 3 ends in such a personal, branching way that picking a single canonical timeline would feel almost heretical. Would the developers choose one “true” ending? Or try to synthesize thousands of permutations into a new universal thread?

And then there’s the question of tone. Would Baldur’s Gate 4 carry the torch of dramatic character writing and moral complexity that made BG3 shine? Or would a new developer—assuming Larian steps away entirely—risk diluting that magic?

Historically, the Baldur’s Gate name is tied to multiple studios: BioWare began it; Black Isle carried it; Beamdog restored it; and Larian redefined it. So a new steward isn’t unprecedented—but the bar Larian set is staggeringly high.

The CRPG Genre Has Momentum Again

One unexpected outcome of BG3’s success is how it reinvigorated the entire genre of computer role-playing games. Suddenly, publishers and players alike remembered how deeply satisfying a CRPG can be when crafted with care.

So even if Baldur’s Gate 4 never materializes, its impact will echo. Studios might greenlight more ambitious RPGs. Systems-rich storytelling may once again become mainstream. And fans, emboldened by BG3’s example, will continue demanding depth, agency, and soul from the games they play.

Fan Expectations—and the Danger of Sequel Pressure

Of course, there's a catch. For every cry of "Give us BG4!" there’s an equal fear: What if it’s not as good? BG3 was lightning in a bottle. The writing, design, voice acting, and community affection aligned in a way few games can replicate.

A rushed sequel, or one created without the same obsessive devotion, could hurt the legacy rather than extend it. And that may be exactly why Larian chose to leave the table while the dice were still warm.

So… Will We Ever See It?

Honestly, we don’t know—and that’s kind of the point. Baldur’s Gate has always been about choice, uncertainty, and forging your own story. Maybe one day another studio will feel brave (or foolish) enough to pick up the torch. Maybe Wizards of the Coast will hand the license to a new storyteller. Maybe not.

But one thing is certain: Baldur’s Gate 3 raised the bar. If there is ever a Baldur’s Gate 4, it won’t just be expected. It will be expected to be miraculous.

Until then, the sword is sheathed. The gate is closed. But somewhere out there, a bard is already writing the first song of what could be the next great chapter.
